Caldonia: Concert and Film Posters from the Ralph DeLuca Collection at Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art
November 24 @ 10:00 am - 5:30 pm$18
Adult admission $18 + Taxes & Fees – Lowest Price Guaranteed | Monday – Sunday open 10am – 6pm (Last Admission at 5:30pm) thru January 22, 2022 | Caldonia: Concert and Film Posters from the Ralph DeLuca Collection presents a cultural and historical view of an archive of images of African American performers slowly disappearing from public memory. Caldonia features early to mid-twentieth century posters announcing the performance dates of musicians as wide-ranging as Otis Redding, Ruth Brown, Thelonius Monk, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin—including the 1945 poster advertising “Caldonia,” which was released on Decca Records by Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five. This exhibition also includes announcements for films such as Cabin in the Sky (1943) featuring Ethel Waters and Lena Horne, and St. Louis Blues starring Bessie Smith. Many of the posters exhibited are themselves rare, but their true value comes from their content and historical context. These performances and films launched the careers of now-household names who changed the shape of American music.
