One of the original teen idols, Donny Osmond has become a versatile performer with credits on the big (and little) screen, as well as on radio and on stage. Getting his start with the sibling collective The Osmonds, Donny struck off on a solo career in the 1970s, after which he teamed up with his sister, Marie, for a career as a duet that took them from the music industry to a successful TV variety show to a Vegas staple.
Donny Osmond history
As a member of a large Mormon family, Donald Clark Osmond — the seventh son in the family — teamed up with four of his brothers to form The Osmonds. In the ’70s, Alan, Jay, Merrill and Wayne served as backup singers/dancers to Donny, who quickly emerged as the group’s leader. The band got their big break on The Andy Williams Show, where they performed.
During the height of their popularity, The Osmonds were compared to other boy bands like The Jackson 5. While the ’80s saw a decline in popularity for the singer-songwriter, he made a comeback in 1985 with a performance on the Jeff Beck single “Ambitious.” He also teamed up with Peter Gabriel on the 1989 song “Soldier of Love,” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard pop charts.
Donny Osmond personal life
In 1978, Donny Osmond married fellow Mormon Debra Glenn. Even though they were only 20 years old when they married, they remain married to this day. Together with Debra, he has five sons. In 2005, Osmond’s second son, Jeremy, made him a grandfather for the first time, when he and his wife welcomed a son, Dylan James.
