Etheridge was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1960. She began playing guitar at the age of eight and started writing songs in her teens. In 1984, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. She signed with Island Records in 1986 and released her self-titled debut album in 1988. The album was a critical and commercial success, spawning the hit singles “Bring Me Some Water” and “No Souvenirs.”
Etheridge’s second album, Brave and Crazy (1989), was also a success, and she won her first Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for the song “No Souvenirs.” Her third album, Never Enough (1992), was even more successful, and she won her second Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for the song “Ain’t It Heavy.”
In 1993, Etheridge released her fourth album, Yes I Am. The album was a commercial and critical smash, and it spawned the hit singles “I’m the Only One,” “Come to My Window,” and “If I Wanted To.” Yes I Am was certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA and won Etheridge her third Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
Etheridge continued to release successful albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s. She has also won numerous awards, including 10 Grammy Awards, 2 American Music Awards, and 2 MTV Video Music Awards. She has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Etheridge is a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights and has been a role model for many people. She is also a breast cancer survivor and has spoken out about her experience with the disease.
