Article Date: January 22, 2023 • Oscar Goodman is a well-known figure in Las Vegas, having served as the city’s mayor from 1999 to 2011. During his tenure, Goodman was known for his colorful personality and his efforts to revitalize the downtown area of Las Vegas.
Goodman was born in Philadelphia in 1939 and earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He moved to Las Vegas in 1964 and established a successful law practice, representing many high-profile clients, including mobsters such as Frank Rosenthal and Tony Spilotro.
In 1999, Goodman decided to run for mayor of Las Vegas, and he was elected with a large majority. During his time in office, he focused on revitalizing the downtown area, which had been in decline for many years. He worked to attract new businesses and residents to the area, and he also helped to develop new attractions, such as the Mob Museum and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.
Goodman was known for his flamboyant style and his love of the city. He often walked around downtown with a martini in hand, and he even had a cocktail named after him at the Golden Nugget casino. He was also an advocate for the legalisation of marijuana and helped to establish the Las Vegas Medical Marijuana Association.
After serving three terms as mayor, Goodman decided not to run for re-election in 2011. However, his legacy lives on in the city. The downtown area has undergone a resurgence in recent years, and many attribute this to Goodman’s efforts. He is still remembered as one of Las Vegas’s most iconic and influential figures, who helped to shape the city into the vibrant and exciting destination it is today.
